Very deep purple-black in color, the 2013 Eligo has an intoxicating nose of creme de cassis, blueberry tart and violets with underlying menthol, cloves, fenugreek, licorice and dark chocolate hints. The medium to full-bodied palate is youthfully restrained, with taut, muscular blackberry and exotic spice flavors supported by fine-grained, firm tannins and lively acid, finishing with excellent length. This is a very classy 2013 Shiraz!

Duval’s regional red, which melds shiraz, grenache and mourvèdre together seamlessly, is a stunning rendition in the 2012 vintage. The Barossan origin is strong in all aspects of the wine, which shows deep blackberries and other red fruits on the nose in addition to some gently earthy and tarry meat accents, hints of nutty oak and a sense of vibrant ripeness. The palate delivers redder than expected fruit flavors. Grenache speaks strong here. Tannins are soft, supple and layered, and the wine occupies every corner of the mouth. Opaque ruby. Exotic, spice-accented aromas of raspberry, cherry-vanilla, potpourri and black pepper, along with a hint of mocha. Lush and creamy on entry, then more taut in the middle, offering sappy red berry and candied violet flavors and an overtone of vanillin oak and spices. Deeply concentrated but energetic as well, finishing with excellent clarity and sweet, floral persistence. This wine, which is made from 95% shiraz, 2% each of viognier and mataro and 1% marsanne, benefits enormously from aeration.
