Table #1 with Inma Rodriguez of Bodegas Balbas

2017 Bodegas Balbas Rosato, Ribera del Duero DO
On Sale $14.99
This rosé is light orange-pink with a nose full of red berries, tangerines, and red flowers. It’s dry and mineral-y in the mouth, but shows great ripeness, with loads of fresh red fruits and honeysuckle and even a touch of blood orange. The finish is bone dry, silky, and long. It’s extremely easy to drink, with everything needed to handle rich foods while still delivering straightforward drinking pleasure.

Aged for five months in new and used French and American oak barrels. Opaque ruby red color with dark berry, anise, and incense aromas and notes of cracked pepper and wood smoke. Ripe and expansive on the palate, offering plush, silky tannins. The finish is exotic and smoke-tinged. Amazing value here.

2015 Balbas “Crianza,” Ribera del Duero DO
On Sale $24.99
This wine is aged 18 months in new and used French oak. It’s got a knock-out nose of candied dark berries, roasted coffee beans, and incense, with a mineral nuance adding complexity. The addition of Cabernet Sauvignon really works here. In the mouth the tannin is ripe, with plenty of blueberry and cherry-cola flavors, while remaining surprisingly fresh thanks to juicy acidity. Smoky oak notes carry through the full bodied but elegant finish.

2012 Balbas “Reserva,” Ribera del Duero DO
On Sale $36.99
This beauty is aged 24 months in new French oak. It has an explosive nose of blackberry, cassis, licorice, and graphite… almost Brunello-like! In the mouth, there are notes of spicy cherry and fresh flowers, with an exotic overlay of smoky herbs. It’s round, with sweet tannins, powerful cherry and dark berry flavors, a creamy texture, and slow-building mineral flavors. Finishes with mocha and cured meat on the broad, very long finish. Pretty remarkable stuff, especially for under $40!
