Saturday, November 23

In our Event Space

This year we are hosting TWO different tables for what’s shaping up to be our greatest turkey day tasting to date! Lots of people juggle two families for Turkey Day, so we’re doing the same here at the Merch!

Table #1 Domaine Glennon

Never heard of them….that’s because this is his FIRST EVER VINTAGE. Former Saint Louisan & long time Merch customer Darin Kendrick developed a passion for Burgundy years ago (that might be our fault) and this led him to Oregon’s Willamette Valley where he has discovered the right vineyards (see below) & wine maker, Marcus Goodfellow. Utilizing Burgundian winemaking techniques, they are off to a shockingly brilliant start.

2018 Domaine Glennon “Temperance Hill” Rosé of Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills AVA
On Sale $24.99
This is a wine that instantly transports you to the heart of Bandol in France. 100% whole cluster pressed Pinot Noir from the famed Temperance Hill Vineyard that was barrel fermented in neutral oak. This is serious stuff, like you need to decant this bad boy. The nose is gorgeous, with spicy, mineral driven aromas of currant, blood orange, and white pepper, with a hint of lavender. Balancing the fruits is a bright acidity that carries the wine into a very refreshing finish. The food pairing options for this wine are endless.
Merch Notes

2017 Domaine Glennon “Durant Vineyard” Chardonnay, Dundee Hills AVA
On Sale $44.99
The 2017 Durant Chardonnay saw 18 months of élevage. It has approximately 40% new oak, however that new oak comes in the form of 600L thick stave Damy puncheon instead of 228L barrique. We prefer larger format barrels, as they increase the liquid to wood ratio and tend to have a lower rate of oxygen transfer. It leaps from the glass with beautiful lemon, passion fruit, and flower aromas. On the palate there are two things that really strike me, the balance between flavor and acidity, and its texture. You immediately get elements of fresh meyer lemon rind and honeydew underpinned with a hint of vanilla. It has what a friend described as an “ethereal mouthfeel and viscosity.” Yet it is very light on its feet and has a steely sharpness that persists into the finish. 130 cases were produced.
Darin Kendrick, Owner

2017 Domaine Glennon Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley AVA
On Sale $34.99
Comprised of nearly equal parts J Wrigley and Bednarik vineyards. J Wrigley vineyard is located in the McMinnville AVA. Both are known for producing beautiful darker red fruited wines with structure. The wine is 70% whole cluster and had roughly 40% new Chassin oak (mostly 500L puncheon). When you taste this wine you are able to feel where it is from, it is not cloaked in oak or ripeness. The bouquet shows dried spices, damp earth, and tart red cherry. On the palette the wine bounces back and forth perfectly between delicacy and power with notes of cherry, strawberry, and rhubarb. It should easily drink well and improve over the next 10 years.

Table #2 Support Sonoma

This one is kind of a big deal. With the recent fires in Sonoma County we felt we needed to do something. We’ve partnered up with all of our favorite family owned and operated growers and producers. This is a great way to support the wine community and help them bounce back from this disaster…plus these are all PERFECT for Thanksgiving! We all win!

2018 Bedrock Wine Co. Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma Valley AVA
On Sale $19.99
Perhaps our finest rendition of this bottling to date. This Sauvignon Blanc comes almost exclusively from the steep Uboldi Vineyard on the southern edge of Kenwood- a site where we find the northern exposure and rocky soils make for gloriously perfumed and racy Sauvignon Blanc. In addition, there is a single barrel of Judge Vineyard from Bennett Valley included in the blend. When making this wine we feel that texture is as important as the hallmark aromatics of Musque clone SB. To this end, nearly half of this wine was barrel fermented in a combination of used Austrian and French barrels of various sizes along with a small percentage of new oak. Flavors of Crenshaw melon, yuzu and crunchy fruit dominate. Yum!

2017 Arnot-Roberts Watson Ranch Chardonnay, Napa Valley AVA
On Sale $37.99
The 2017 Chardonnay Watson Ranch is a gorgeous wine. Apricot, chamomile, dried flowers, sage and dried pear are all laced together in this super-expressive, inviting Chardonnay. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2017, as it is quite closed today. Bright saline notes add freshness and zip to this super-expressive Chardonnay.
93 points, Antonio Galloni

2016 Ron Rubin Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley AVA
On Sale $16.99
This is a clear, bright and light-bodied red, the grapes grown on the producer’s estate. Earthy mushroom, forest floor and black tea provide a savory backdrop that remains fresh in the glass thanks to buoyant acidity.
91 points, The Wine Enthusiast

2017 Siduri Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley AVA
On Sale $28.99
A slightly bigger wine than the Sonoma Coast, the 2017 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley offers tons of rich black fruits, cola, and smoked earth characteristics in its medium to full-bodied, rounded, textured profile. Coming from a mix of sites, mostly destemmed (there are 15% whole clusters), and brought up in 17% new French oak, it’s a rocking little wine that delivers loads of pleasure.
92 points, Jeb Dunnuck

2017 Peay Vineyards Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast AVA
On Sale $32.99
The 2017 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is a stellar appellation-level wine from Peay. Light on its feet, perfumed and super-expressive, it has much to offer. Sweet red cherry, plum, rose petal, lavender and spice all develop in the glass. This is a very serious, appellation-level wine done entirely from estate fruit. Don’t miss it.
93 Points, Antonio Galloni

2016 Marietta Cellars “Armé,” North Coast AVA
On Sale $19.99
The 2016 Armé is another superb wine in the middle tier of the Marietta range. Fresh, savory and super-expressive, the Armé has a lot going on. Black cherry, sage, lavender, menthol and licorice give the wine striking savory nuance to play off the dark Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. More than anything else, though, the Armé is a superb value in California Cabernet.
93 Points, Antonio Galloni

2016 Limerick Lane Cellars “Estate” Zinfandel, Russian River Valley AVA
On Sale $37.99
The 2016 Zinfandel Russian River Estate is another gorgeous wine from this estate. Plums, sandalwood, Asian spices, and a hint of cigar all flow to a seamless, elegant Zinfandel that shows the class and quality of this vintage. With medium to full-bodied richness and building, fine tannin, it has complexity, texture, and length. Bravo!
