2016 Domaine des Granges, Macon-Villages AOP
On Sale $13.99
At this price you might not expect much from a wine, but you’d be wrong! This baby delivers quality fruit and amazing elegance, all for a steal! Fermented in 100% stainless steel; this wine is 100% declassified from Macon-Chaintré located just outside of the Pouilly-Fuisse appellation from vineyards with an average age of 35 years. The aromatics are ripeand elegant with apricot and apple notes. In the mouth the wine is fruit forward & juicy with slight smoke and good chalkiness. This is a delicious everyday Chardonnay that outperforms the appellation name on the bottle. Get this producer on your go-to list, stat!
2017 Aubert Lefas “Les Grands Carelles,” Bourgogne Blanc AOP
On Sale $19.99
Only 5 barrels were made of this beauty. That’s around 100 cases and we got about 25% of that production! Aged 100% in barrel, but with no new oak. All the barrels are 1-3 years old and had previously held 1er and grand cru wine. Expressive nose of ripe floral and spicy red and yellow apples. Concentrated fruit in the mouth with touches of oak spice with a silky round texture and finish. FYI, Aubert Lefas is the current steward of Domaine Lejeune and has been kind enough to create The Aubert Lefas-“Vigneron” label for The Wine Merchant. This is a Domaine bottled wine. Boom.
2016 Johan Emonin, Puligny-Montrachet AOP
On Sale $62.99
100% barrel fermented and aged, 25% new oak. The Puligny vineyards are located on the top of the slope above Folatieres. High-toned almost tropical nose with vanilla oak spice. This wine is incredibly compact presenting massive minerality; calcaire is ever present with ripe candied fruit. Spicy, luxurious oak returns on the finish. The Jehan Emonin label is the ancestral label of the outstanding Domaine Bouzereau. The Jehan Emonin label was chosen to honor Vincent’s Grandfather (Jehan Emonin). Again, a Domaine bottled wine (it’s kind of a big deal.)
2015 Victor Fagon, Cote de Nuits Villages AOP
On Sale $39.99
100% Barrel fermented with 70% new oak. The average vine age is at 55 years old! All of the fruit hails from the village of Premeaux, just below 1er Cru’s Clos d’Arlot & Clos de la Marechale. This is always a major overachiever! Black in color with a black cherry, blackberry, cassis, smoked herbs, earthy nose; dense, jammy ripe black fruits, spicy oak, earth & lots of calcaire freshness and structure on the palate; the finish continues with the fruit but has plenty of mineral, underbrush and spicy-toasty oak that adds complexity. The Victor Fagon label is our exclusive label for the outstanding wines of Maison Bertrand Amboise. These wines are among the most concentrated and boldest expressions of Pinot Noir & Chardonnay available. Buy some before the staff drinks all of it.
2016 Domaine Poulleau “Chanlin,” Volnay 1er Cru AOP
On Sale $59.99
100% barrel with 33% new oak; dark garnet color with loads of briary blackberry fruit, smoke, soil and toasty oak in the nose. The mouth is incredibly compact and full of fruit but the calcaire aspects push the wine forward. Complex spice, earth and oak tannins complete the finish of this outstanding wine. The grapes are 100% hand harvested with a severe triage before fermentation and represent classic terroir and fruit focused wines. Thierry Poulleau is very judicious with his use of oak, always respecting the individuality of the parcel’s terroir.
2016 Domaine J. Boulon, Morgon AOP
On Sale $12.99
The wines from this address represent classic “old school” Beaujolais. They showcase the brilliant high-toned fruit and freshness we want, but also the beautiful depth and complexity that often is absent. The family’s vineyard work is meticulous. All the grapes are hand harvested and average around 40% whole-cluster fermentation. The fruit comes from pure clay and granite soil. The vineyards are situated in both the Northern and Southern limits of Morgon. Classically ripe, as Morgon tends to be, with plush wild cherries and spices on the nose. Lovely concentration that gives a plush fruity, velvety texture in the mouth too. The finish is persistent with gentle brown stem tannins and notes of earth, smoke and juicy briar fruits.
