Evesham Wood Pinot Noirs

26 Nov Evesham Wood Pinot Noirs

You might think it’s odd that these Oregon Pinot Noirs were reviewed by the folks at Burghound, since they usually only review the wines of Burgundy. It just goes to show how sophisticated these wines are. The styling is very Burgundian. And if the term “Burgundian” appeals to you, then these wines will as well. Evesham Wood is at the top of the Oregon wine game, and their Pinot Noirs are exceptional. These single-vineyard selections are stellar examples of evoking the particular character of a specific vineyard. The wines are all made the same way, so the only difference is the small parcel of land on which the grapes are grown. It’s exciting to find domestic wines with such a sense of place.

2014 Evesham Wood Pinot Noir “Le Puits Sec”
On Sale $33.99
A cool, restrained and almost grudging nose only reluctantly gives up its beautifully complex aromas of briar, dark currant, earth and cool dried herbal wisps. The sleekly muscular middle weight flavors possess impressive vibrancy along with fine mid-palate density that brims with sappy dry extract which also serves to buffer the firm and serious but phenolically mature tannins shaping the strikingly long finish. This is bold, robust and powerful yet it’s not top heavy or rustic. With that said, it is not a candidate for early consumption, indeed this will need every bit of a decade to arrive at its full peak. Terrific.

2014 Evesham Wood Pinot Noir “Mahonia”
On Sale $29.99
A mild whiff of reduction slightly mutes the appeal of the otherwise pretty red berry, briar and soft spice scents. I very much like the mouth feel of the delicious, energetic and well- detailed medium-bodied flavors that also flash good power on the balanced, complex and ever-so-slightly rustic finish. This is certainly good and offers plenty of character but I would not describe it as refined. Note that this too definitely needs at least a few years of cellaring.

2014 Evesham Wood Pinot Noir “Temperance Hill”
On Sale $29.99
A ripe but restrained nose is also mildly reduced though aggressive swirling eventually coaxes out both higher and lower register aromas that include plum, dark cherry, raspberry, tea and rose petal. There is excellent mid-palate density to the tautly muscular and overtly powerful middle weight plus flavors that are shaped by a very firm tannic spine on the impressively persistent finale. Like the Mahonia this is robust and borderline rustic but overall, there is simply more potential, provided you are willing to cellar it appropriately. 2026+

2014 Evesham Wood Pinot Noir “Illahe”
On Sale $24.99
This is also quite aromatically perfumed with its well-layered mix of pure red and dark cherry, violet and appealing spiced scents. The succulent, vibrant and solidly intense medium-bodied flavors possess both fine richness as well as good delineation that continues onto the dusty, mouth coating and wonderfully persistent finale. This firmly structured and impeccably well-balanced effort stops just short of being robust and is not only clearly built-to-age but is going to need it. Excellent. 2024+
