11 Jan Great Winter Reds
Is there anything greater than some hearty winter fare and a great Cotes-du-Rhone? We’d be hard pressed to come up with another appellation that can punch so much higher above its weight at the under $20 price point. This is gorgeous Grenache at an amazing price, from the spectacular 2015 vintage! What more can we ask for?
2015 Domaine de Marcoux Cotes-du-Rhone AOC
On Sale $17.99 (lowest price online!)
This humble Cotes-du-Rhone is a total sleeper! Produced by two sisters with a history of over delivering on the QPR, the 2015 is right in line. A big nose of black cherry and raspberry but also subtle earthy notes of pepper and leather. The palate is serious with great tannin, chalky mineral and great freshness. This is a killer pairing for roasted chicken, braised meats and hard nutty cheeses. This could easily lay down for 3-5 years but it’s awfully hard to resist right now.
Mastrojanni is, for us, a reference point for the region of Brunello di Montalcino. They make super traditional wines…..100% Sangiovese and only large (Allier) oak casks are used. These are simply the finest examples out there and we’ve an awesome price on this “baby Brunello.”
2015 Mastrojanni Rosso di Montalcino DOC
On Sale $26.99
Ok it’s not as big or rich as their flagship Brunello di Montalcino but….it IS as charming and, more importantly, it drinks beautifully young! We also think this will easily age for the next 4-5 years. It spent about 7 months in large (5,400 liter) Allier oak barrels. Bright ruby red in color, aromas of red cherries that are complemented by baking spices and earthy goodness. The palate features red fruit, herbs and a savory, spicey finish. This is a fresh and vibrant expression of sangiovese with fine tannins. Wonderfully food friendly, it will drink beautifully for 3-4 years. This is an excellent wine to pair with stews, roasts, meat pastas, and more. This Rosso is a true value and a first class wine.
