High Scoring Carlisle Zinfandels & More

Perhaps one of the most maligned grape varieties in the U.S. would be Zinfandel. From the notorious White Zinfandel of the 1980s to the extremely alcoholic versions that emerged in the late 90s to early aughts, it has been neglected and abused to no end. But, it seems many California producers are finally finding their footing when it come to this grape that originated in Slovenia a few hundred years ago. Mike Officer is one of the greats when it comes to this misunderstood grape. Sourcing from ancient vineyards, he is crafting exquisite single vineyard red wines and the oddball Gruner Veltliner from 90 year old vines that is truly outstanding. Snatch them up quick!

2014 Carlisle Zinfandel Montafi Ranch, Russian River Valley
On Sale $43.99
The production levels were relatively abundant for Mike Officer and the wines fruit-forward, although softer and less reserved than some of the 2013s. While not quite as opaque in color, they are loaded with fruit, supple and luscious.
93-95 Points, The Wine Advocate

2014 Carlisle Zinfandel Rossi Ranch, Sonoma Valley
On Sale $43.99
Medium-dark to dark ruby-purple. Piercing aromas of macerated cherries and raspberries with hints of white pepper and bramble (the typical Rossi garrigue). Full-bodied on the palate with a pleasing creaminess, flavors of boysenberry and peppery spice persist through the long and gently tannic finish. Enjoy this organically-farmed Zinfandel between late 2016 and 2024.

2014 Carlisle Syrah Papa’s Block, Russian River Valley
On Sale $40.99
The 2014 Syrah Papa’s Block is an intense, deep wine. The 30% whole clusters are pretty much buried by the sheer richness and overall intensity of the fruit. Lavender, violet, blueberry jam and spices are super-expressive, but the acidity and tannin both need quite a bit of time to soften. This is an especially huge wine, even by the standards of Papa’s and Carlisle more broadly. Patience is essential.

2014 Carlisle Petite Sirah Palisades Vineyard, Napa Valley
On Sale $46.99
If you already know what Mike Officer does, and the style of his wines, you won’t be disappointed in his 2014s. You may even like them as much as any vintage, given the fact that this year shows a lot of up-front fruit and charm.
95-97 Points, The Wine Advocate

2014 Carlisle Gruner Veltliner Steiner Vineyard, Sonoma Mountain
On Sale $28.99
Medium-light to medium straw-yellow. Just the barest hint of green. Perfumed aromas of white grapefruit, pineapple, and snap peas. The most Austrian-smelling Grüner we’ve made to date. Medium-bodied with flavors of grapefruit, lime, honeydew melon, and white pepper. A bit more cool-climate-y than previous renditions. Great acidity and a very mineral-y finish. This wine can certainly be enjoyed now but should develop additional complexity with age. Drink from release through 2024.
