Mas d’en Compte from Priorat are just such wines. Priorat is a tiny growing area of forbidding hillsides that are chock full of slate soils. These yield wines of exceptional character and intensity. the 2013 Mas d’en Compte is a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Carignan aged in a combination of concrete tanks. Large wood foudres and smaller French oak barrels. The wine offers loads of licorice and black raspberries and seems to represent the quintessential style of Priorat in its opulence – floral, blueberry and black raspberry fruit, intense minerality and silky, lush tannins. This medium to full-bodied wine should continue to drink well for another 5-8 years, possibly longer.

The final blend of the 2013 Black Slate is 60% Grenache, 35% Carignan and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, all aged for one year in French oak (60% new and 40% one-year-old). The color is inky/bluish/purple. The wine offers up notes of blueberry and blackberry liqueur mixed with wet rocks, spring flowers and graphite, followed by a full-bodied, dense, multidimensional wine with fabulous intensity, loads of burgeoning complexity and a precise and lush feel to the palate. Tannins are present, but silky and well-integrated. This is a seamless, beautifully made wine that sells for a song, considering the quality and complexity it possess. Drink over the next 5-8 years.

2013 El Chaparral de Vega Sindoa, Navarra

Brilliant ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of cherry compote, smoky Indian spices, vanilla and licorice, with a building floral note. Coats the palate with juicy black raspberry and spicecake flavors enlivened by juicy acidity. Quite rich, especially in the context of the vintage, finishing with seamless berry flavors, smooth tannins and excellent persistence. The vines here were reportedly planted between 1890 and 1930.

2014 La Cartuja, Priorat

Smoky, spicy dark berries and mocha appear on the nose and in the mouth, with a subtle mineral nuance building in the glass. Tangy acidity adds lift and definition to the juicy, sharply focused palate. Finishes long and minerally with slow-building dusty tannins. Aged in used French oak barrels for six month. In the context of Priorat, this wine delivers excellent value.
