We have a very special event with hands down one of the greatest winemakers to ever hail from Australia, John Duval! John made numerous vintages of Penfold’s Grange (Australia’s most famous wine, hailed the world over) among many other rarities from down under. His wines are always of the utmost quality and continue to be among the best Australian wines, period. John will be guiding a lucky few through a tasting of his current labels, paired with cheese and charcuterie from our cheese department. There will be a few extra special bottles poured at the end, including a 1992 Penfold’s Grange, to celebrate his ongoing legacy!

2013 John Duval Plexus White
On Sale $26.99
(55% marsanne, 32% roussanne and 13% viognier): Light yellow. Ripe orchard and pit fruits on the deeply perfumed, spice-tinged nose and in the mouth. Round and fleshy yet lively, with slow-building spiciness and a touch of honeysuckle. The spicy quality repeats strongly on the finish, which leaves notes of peach pit and lemon curd behind. The richest rendition of this bottling to date, but not at all lacking for vivacity.

2012 John Duval Plexus Red (Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvedre)
On Sale $36.99
(51% shiraz, 30% grenache and 19% mourvedre): Deep ruby. Complex aromas of red and dark berries, pipe tobacco, peppery spices and fresh flowers. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry and cherry compote flavors that flesh out and become spicier with air. Tightens back up on the long, incisive finish, which is firmed by dusty, fine-grained tannins. This wine saw only 10% new French oak.

2013 John Duval Entity Shiraz
On Sale $36.99
(aged for 15 months in French oak hogsheads, 35% new): Opaque ruby. Exotic black and blue fruits, incense and smoky Indian spices on the explosively perfumed nose. Sweet, round and fleshy in the mouth, with primary dark fruit flavors complicated by hints of candied violet, cola and licorice. Chewy, building tannins give shape and structure to the wine’s youthful fruit, which dominates the very long, broad, juicy finish. There’s great potential here but I’d give the wine at least a few more years in the cellar for its components to harmonize more completely.

2012 John Duval Eligo Shiraz
On Sale $82.99
Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2012 Eligo has a profoundly scented nose of crème de cassis, blackberry pie, licorice, dark chocolate and blueberry preserves against an earthy/meaty background of bacon fat, forest floor, beef dripping and black loam. The densely packed, full-bodied palate manages almost paradoxical elegance and restraint with velvety tannins and lively acid giving closure to the long, multilayered finish.

NV Chambers Rosewood Rutherglen Muscat
On Sale $14.99 (375ml half bottle)
from a 375-ml. bottle): Bright amber-gold. Smoke- and spice-accented scents of orange, toffee and baked apple, with notes of caramel and honey in the background. Sweet and silky but penetrating on the palate, offering bitter orange pith and cinnamon pastry flavors that show surprising vivacity for their richness. Closes sweet, spicy and quite long, leaving orange liqueur and baking spice notes behind.
