Paul L

Drink up Chuckles.

We had the opportunity to taste with Paul last year in Santa Barbara and found the wines absolutely enchanting. He is one of the most exciting winemakers in the region, turning out magnificent Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah from single vineyard sites all over Santa Barbara. Like many winemakers in this area, his “winery” is an immense warehouse facility called Central Coast Wine Estates near Santa Maria. This is a boon for winemakers who have the passion and skill, but not the budget for a multi-million dollar winery and tasting room. Truly artisan wine. None are currently reviewed, but we have included scores from past vintages as a comparison.

“At the top of the heap with regard to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Santa Barbara County, Paul Lato continues to focus on small yields and tiny production cuvees from his base in the Santa Maria co-op. While the rage these days is harvesting early and chasing Burgundy-like textures and flavors, Paul’s wines make a mockery of this approach and offer sensational texture, purity and freshness, without giving up on the incredible fruit that makes California so special.”

2014 Paul Lato Pinot Noir “Matinee,” Santa Barbara
On Sale $44.99
A cuvee of de-classified fruit from his other single vineyard bottlings, the Contender is always the most approachable of his wines, ready for consumption immediately. Redolent of soft red fruit and an underlying elegance that stems from the restrained use of French oak on this wine, it is a sleeper wine in the lineup.
