New Spain Tasting

01 Aug New Spain Tasting

Saturday, August 3
12 to 4pm
In our Event Space

We’ve been working hard to breathe new life into our Spanish wine section, and we’re ready to show it off! For years Spanish wines have been plagued with too many “drink-alikes.” Heavy handed oak regimens, over-ripe and over-extracted juice make reds that ALL get big scores, but at the end of the day are all a lateral move from each other. We set out at the beginning of the year to right our ship and present better-made, unique, and classic examples from the country with more vineyards than anywhere else on Earth! After traveling, meeting with importers, and a lot of time tasting, we think we’re really dialed in! Come taste some of our favorite new-ish arrivals this weekend!

2016 Bodegas Ordonez Nisia Old Vines Verdejo, Rueda
On Sale $13.99
This bold white is full-bodied and exuberant, with exotic flavors of pineapple, mango and coconut that stretch out on a rich frame, but remain firmly supported by juicy tangerine acidity. Atypical but has depth and balance. Drink now through 2022. 1,000 cases made, 650 cases imported.
92 Points, The Wine Spectator

2017 Adegas Valmiñor Albariño “Torroxal,” DO Rías Baixas
On Sale $10.99
Bright straw-yellow. Mineral-tinged orange zest, pear and jasmine scents are complemented by a subtle touch of quinine. Shows very good clarity and tension to its juicy citrus and orchard fruit flavors, which deepen slowly on the back half. Lingers with strong persistence, leaving floral and orange notes behind. (All stainless steel.)
90 points, Vinous Media

2017 Alonso Lopez Malvasia, Rioja
On Sale $9.99
Some exotic and attractive ripe melon aromas with shades of tropical mango and papaya. The palate delivers fleshy, fresh peaches. Succulent and tangy. Drink now.
91 Points, James Suckling

2018 3 Miradas Pedro Ximenez Vino de Pueblo, Sierra de Montilla
On Sale $16.99
A crisp dry white that has some nutty, oxidative complexity with a little praline, white chocolate and grilled almonds. Fresh and crisp palate and a nice, dry finish. Lovely, flor-like undertones to this, due to the fino sherry-like winemaking style. Drink now.
92 Points, James Suckling

2015 Parcelas de Familia Barrel Aged Red Blend, Valencia
On Sale $12.99
Poached raspberry and strawberry aromas with boysenberry, too. This is a riot of fresh, vibrant fruit and some lightly spicy, chocolate-powdery oak on the palate. Drink now.
91 Points, James Suckling

2016 Cellar Capçanes “Potente,” DO Monstant
On Sale $12.99
Very attractive nose of black cherries, sage and chocolate. Ripe and generous with nice, warm tannins that fill out the full body very nicely. Long and very harmonious finish. Drink or hold.
93 Points, James Suckling

2015 Crapula “Soul” Old Vine Monastrell-Syrah, DO Jumilla
On Sale $12.99
A tight wine with dark berries and some hazelnut and wet earth. Medium-bodied, linear and firm. Savory finish. Cool stuff. Drink now.
