Saturday, October 7
12 to 4pm
In our Event Space
We’re excited to welcome back our old friend and native St. Louisan Cal Nicholson of Nicholson Jones Winery, for one of our most popular annual tastings! These beauties from California are made by French native Julien Fayard and the quality of his wines is consistently high. We’ll taste through the whole range of Nicholson Jones wines!
2015 Nicholson Jones Sauvignon Blanc
On Sale $22.99
The nose exhibits lemon-lime, passion fruit, and white peach notes wrapped around a mineral core that’s indicative of the vineyard site. Peach, green apple, and sugar snap pea display themselves on in the palate, with a finish of slate and match stick. This wine balances ripeness and fresh acidity showing versatility as a food wine, or to be simply enjoyed with friends.
2014 Nicholson Jones Chardonnay Dolly Hill Vineyard
On Sale $22.99
Pale white gold in color with green glints. The nose shows a complex floral note from the extended time on it’s lees. Over-steeped chamomile tea gives way to classic yellow apple, ripe pear and melon aromas. The palate is full bodied, yet crisp. The melon and apple really come through with almond and hazelnut playing a complicating role. There’s a Chablis like character to the long, smokey, mineral laced finish.
2011 Nicholson Jones Chardonnay Wooden Dolly Vineyard
On Sale $34.99
From the same Dolly Hill Vineyard only fermented and aged in 100% new oak for 21 months. A similar fruit profile, but with more poached apple and baking spices. Rounder, fuller in the mouth with creamy vanilla, cut pear, and lemon zest notes that flesh out and well integrated oak tones.
2012 Nicholson Jones Proprietary Napa Cuvee
On Sale $43.99
Aromas of baking spice, currants, blueberry, blackberry and vanilla are present almost immediately upon pouring. Given time in the glass a solid core of black cherry and high-toned red currant emerge against a backdrop of leather, smoke, earth and violets. The texture and is round and velvety on the palate with a contrasting freshness and acidity that make this wine atypically light on its feet for being so full bodied. Finely integrated tannins and subtle minerality further contribute to a long complex finish.
2010 Nicholson Jones Syrah Sugarloaf Vineyard
On Sale $62.99
A deep ruby purple in color, this wine has notes of lilac, blueberries, and roasted carob on the nose. Its mouth filling, medium weight viscosity cascades over the palate to reveal a textured mélange of savory herbs, roasted game and crushed mineral. Old world finesse meets new world concentration in this classic example of what Syrah can become in the right hands. This wine can be enjoyed now but has the balance and structure to develop gracefully over the next decade.
2011 Nicholson Jones Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville
On Sale $109.99
The 2011 Nicholson Jones Cabernet is a deep glass-staining purple, showing rings of ruby as it moves towards the edge of the glass. Vanilla bean and cassis on the nose mingle with blackberry jam, cinnamon and spice. Ripe and explosively opulent, juicy cherries and plums combine with blackberry and currant, again expressing their concentration on the pallet. This wine is full bodied and rich, with silky tannins and a long sweet finish. Decant two to three hours for full expression of aromatics.
2013 Nicholson Jones Cabernet Sauvignon Sugarloaf Vineyard
On Sale $123.99
A deep purple to ruby as it approaches the edge of the glass, this wine is quite visually remarkable. Sweet aromas of vanilla, cassis, black cherry, and baking spices are marked in the nose along with notes of violets, licorice, earth, and cigar box. Rich layers of currant, blackberry and kirsch mingle on the palate as they meet a solid core of balanced acidity and very fine tannins. This wine is full bodied, plush and opulent with big structure but can be enjoyed now given sufficient air, or cellared to develop further and enjoy in the coming years.
2013 Nicholson Jones Cabernet Sauvignon Sleeping Lady
On Sale $139.99
Striking aromatics, fine tannins and the vibrant red and purplish fruit are some of the signatures in the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Sleeping Lady. The 2013 is powerful and voluptuous, as all of Fayard’s wines are, but the tannins are nicely balanced, and all the elements are in the right place.
