19 Oct Rare Aged Burgundies

Young red Burgundies are difficult wines. Maybe Burgundy aficionados can taste their potential but there’s no question about it, red (and many white) Burgundies improve with age. The idea of buying a bottle and then waiting almost ten years to open it isn’t very appealing to most people. Well, with these rare gems, the chateau has done all the waiting for you! These wines are in their peak drinking windows now. Along with this collection of reds, we’re including two whites from Meursault (some of the most ageworthy white wines on the planet.

2011 Thierry et Pascale Matrot Meursault
On Sale $39.99 (lowest price online!)
The 2011 Meursault offers up honey, hazelnuts, butter, yellow peaches and apricots, all in a soft, textured style with tons of early and medium term appeal. The gently spiced finish is highly attractive. I don’t see the 2011 making old bones, but it sure is beautiful today.

2009 Bouchard Pere et Fils 1er Cru Beaune du Chateau
Closeout! $29.99 (lowest price online!)
Good pale color. Crushed rock, pear, menthol and mirabelle on the slightly blurry nose. Gives a sweet impression on entry, then shows less tension and definition in the mid-palate than the Puligny villages, not to mention finesse. The stone fruit flavors lead to a somewhat warm finish, with modest grip.

These are small-production wines from a father-son team who together farm just 14.5 acres of vineyards. The wines are gorgeous and this is a producer we’re enjoying getting to know. To have library bottlings from them is even better because we can see how much aging potential the wines have.
