2016 Virgen de la Sierra “OGV” Old Vines Garnacha, DO Calatayud
On Sale $9.99
Enveloping nose of blue fruit and impressive concentration on the palate of this expressive garnacha. Lovely, creamy texture, in spite of a healthy dose of tannin, the long finish leaves you in no doubt. Drink or hold.
93 Points James Suckling

2011 Alonso Lopez Rioja Reserva
On Sale $20.99
2011 was a very healthy and warm vintage, but even so, the 2011 Reserva, a varietal Tempranillo, has moderate alcohol and healthy acidity. It was sourced from 2.5 hectares of old vines in Lapuebla de Labarca, fermented in stainless steel and aged in French barriques for 22 months. It feels more balsamic with more depth, quite oaky and spicy in a hedonistic, heady way. The fruit is ripe and voluptuous, and the palate shows resolved tannins and clean flavors. This is perfect for current drinking, a clean, updated classic Rioja that should also evolve nicely in bottle. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2014.

2015 Ovidio Garcia Crianza “Esencia,” Rioja

Saturday Tasting:

Saturday, February 15

We’re keeping the Spanish theme going and introducing some new vintages and altogether new wines. On hand will be our good buddy Craig Baker and Importer Ignacio Alonso. They’re just back from Spain’s wine regions with a bevy of new releases that are sure to please all palates and pocketbooks.

Multi-Vintage Castel de Sant Pau, Brut Nature, Cava DO
On Sale $9.99
This lovely, crisp and refreshing bubbly is made in the modern style of the most sought-after grower champagnes: with no dosage, or added sugar (thus the “brut nature” nomenclature). This is yet another example of why cava is a favorite sparkling wine for budget-conscious wine lovers.
93 points, The Wine Spectator

2018 Lagar del Rey Verdejo, Rueda, Spain
On Sale $9.99
Lemon and orange peel aromas are direct and crisp, followed by a medium-bodied palate with bracing acidity. Lightly briny citrus and melon aromas are standard for Verdejo, while this is focused and solid on a juicy finish.
90 points, James Suckling

2017 Adegas Valmiñor Albariño “Torroxal,” DO Rías Baixas
On Sale $10.99
Bright straw-yellow. Mineral-tinged orange zest, pear and jasmine scents are complemented by a subtle touch of quinine. Shows very good clarity and tension to its juicy citrus and orchard fruit flavors, which deepen slowly on the back half. Lingers with strong persistence, leaving floral and orange notes behind. (All stainless steel.)
90 points, Vinous Media

2015 Casar de Burbia Mencía “Casar,” DO Bierzo
On Sale $13.99
Brimming with sour-cherry, cranberry and floral aromas on the nose, this is a vibrant and racy mencía with polished tannins and acidity and a long, star-bright mineral finish. Drink or hold.
93 points, James Suckling

2016 Cellar Capçanes “Potente,” DO Monstant
On Sale $12.99
Very attractive nose of black cherries, sage and chocolate. Ripe and generous with nice, warm tannins that fill out the full body very nicely. Long and very harmonious finish. Drink or hold.
93 Points, James Suckling

2017 Crápula Wines “Gold,” DO Jumilla
On Sale $11.99
Dark berry and toasty, spicy oak aromas make for a modern impression. Good concentration on the toasty and spicy palate. Impressive wine. Drink now.
91 points, James Suckling

2018 Bon Mas, Priorat DOCa
On Sale $16.99
This is a real stunner. Rarely do you see wines from this top Spanish region for well under $20! Fermented in concrete eggs with indigenous yeast and aged out in French and American barrels. Sexy blue and black fruit fruits and floral notes are complemented by baking spices and a smoky mineral component. This has concentration but remains light on its feet. The black/blue fruit and bitter cherry flavors hit a peak with air. Silky tannin wraps up the long finish.
