Biondi Santi Tasting
Saturday, September 10
12 to 4pm
In Our Event Space
In the 1840s, Clemente Santi of Biondi-Santi single-handedly invented the modern appellation of Brunello di Montalcino, championing the use of only Sangiovese for their wines. It is the particular clone of Sangiovese used here, Sangiovese Grosso, that imparts the full bodied, dense nature of these magnificent wines. In modern times, the estate, Il Greppo, is comprised of 47 hectares, 25 of which are planted with this singular version of Sangiovese. We’re sampling this whole lineup on Saturday with Jason Ledbetter of Tavolo Vigneto. This is an amazing chance to sample the wines from a historic estate.
2012 Jacopo Biondi-Santi Castello di Motepo, Morellino di Scansano
On Sale $26.99
A blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc from Jacopo’s Maremma estate, he has Castello di Montepo to pursue his own personal projects far from the family’s storied winery in Montalcino.
2012 Jacopo Biondi-Santi Castello di Motepo “Braccale,” Maremma IGT
On Sale $26.99
A great food-friendly Tuscan red made from Sangiovese and softened with the addition of 20% Merlot. Ten months in oak adds some spicy complexity. This wine opens with a unique blackberry like bouquet with scents of licorice blended in. On the palate, it’s is medium bodied, smooth and soft, with juicy black current flavors nicely integrated tobacco and cedar. The finish is quite dry with noticeable tannins that are nicely extended. Drink now and over the next 4 years.
2012 Jacopo Biondi-Santi “Sassolalloro,” Toscana
On Sale $54.99
A soft and silky red with a lightly dusty texture. Juicy fruit. Berry and chocolate character. Balanced style. Drink now.

2013 Biondi-Santi Rosso di Montalcino
On Sale $65.99
The Rosso di Montalcino comes from the younger Sangiovese-Grosso-vineyards (between 5 and 10 years old) of the Il Greppo Estate. It also ages for 12 month in Slavonian oak casks and it is a wine ready to drink, young and fruity. Both wines have a quite intense ruby red colour, typical, and intense perfume. They are dry, warm, tasty and lightly tannic.
2011 Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino “Annata”
On Sale $187.99
The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Annata is silky, soft and open-knit, especially within the context of what has been the norm at Biondi Santi for the last few decades. Freshly cut flowers, red berries and mint all open up in the glass, but it is the wine’s decidedly mid-weight structure that truly stands out. The 2011 is a very rare young Biondi Santi that will drink well pretty much upon release, as shocked as I myself am to write those words. The bright red cherry, raspberry and floral overtones have an almost Nebbiolo-sense of brightness.
