10 Oct Crazy Good (Affordable!) Red Burgundies
Jason tasted with both of these estates this past spring and thought their Bourgognes rocked. They are both based in the Cote de Beaune, within the Cote d’Or area of Burgundy. These are great entry-level red Burgundies.
2014 Domaine Poulleau et Fils Bourgogne Rouge
On Sale $17.99
This Bourgogne is mostly fruit from Volnay and Pommard, known for their darker, racier style of Pinot Noir (compared to Burgundy Pinot made further North, mind you…it’s still classic Burgundy). It has a great dark color and flavors of tiny, tart black currants and hints of pepper and earth. We like Cote d’Or Bourgogne wines specifically because they offer more ripeness and suppleness than their Cote de Nuit counterparts. All the fruit for this wine is grown sustainably and hand-harvested.
2015 Francois Confuron Gindre Bourgogne Rouge
On Sale $18.99
This is a tiny Domaine in Vosne Romanee, and all the fruit comes from that appellation. They’re next door neighbor is the famous estate Meo Camuzet. This bottling offers spectacular quality at a crazy low price. Flavor-wise, it’s classic Pinot–ripe cherry, smoke, and wood spice lace the palate and the body is light but substantial. Beautiful wine.
