World-Class Chardonnays

Loved and hated, Chardonnay is one of the the most planted grape varieties on earth. As a wine it can vary from extremely crisp and earthy to full, lush, and oaky depending on the area and winemaker. Chardonnay is a workhorse grape that can pair well with any number of cuisines, so it begs for a place on your table. These are some outstanding wines from great producers. Act quickly as they are limited.

2014 Failla Chardonnay Haynes Vineyard, Coombsville
On Sale $56.99
The 2014 Chardonnay Haynes Vineyard, from a site in Coombsville, is endowed with a real sense of crystalline purity and nuance. Orange blossom, mint, spice, wild flowers and honey are some of the notes that take shape. A wine of exceptional purity and nuance, the 2014 impresses with its sublime balance. This is a fabulous showing from Ehren Jordan and Failla, as well as one of the many highlights in this strong lineup. Don’t miss it.

2014 Paul Hobbs Chardonnay Richard Dinner Vineyard, Sonoma Mountain
On Sale $74.99
The two 2014 cuvées from the Richard Dinner Vineyard are both full-throttle Chardonnays, with the Cuvée Agustina just bigger, denser, richer and, to my taste, even superior to the 2013 version. Both should drink well for 7-10 years.

2013 Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch, Carneros
On Sale $49.99
The 2013 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch is gorgeous. Lemon oil, white flowers, mint and chamomile meld together in a layered, beautifully expressive Chardonnay endowed with real class and personality. A kick of acidity on the finish keeps the flavors bright and focused throughout. This is a fabulous effort from Shafer. Most of the attention at Shafer falls on the Cabernets, and perhaps rightly so, but the estate has done a commendable job with the Chardonnay in recent years.
