“These latest releases from Charles Smith check in at the top of the pyramid and are flat out incredible wines that I wish every reader could taste. Readers should also check out the new label, Wines of Substance.”

2016 K Vintners Viognier Art Den Hoed Vineyard, Columbia Valley
On Sale $24.99
Delicious, single-vineyard Viognier – layers of Meyer lemon curd, Asian pear, clove, honeydew melon, and bee’s wax. Balanced in the mouth with a minerally finish that’s so long you’ll need binoculars.

2014 K Vintners Cabernet/Syrah “The Creator”
On Sale $54.99
(70% cabernet & 30% syrah from the Powerline Vineyard). The usual co-fermented blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Syrah blend, the 2014 The Creator, offers lots of dark fruits (currants, cassis), wood smoke, graphite and chocolate to go with a full-bodied, ripe, downright sexy profile on the palate. Harvested at the same time, with minuscule yields of 2.1 tons per acre, this rich, uber-concentrated wine shows its Cabernet profile in its tannin and structure, with the Syrah giving it plenty of flesh and texture, as well as a certain meatiness. It will have two decades of overall longevity.

2014 K Vintners Syrah Rock Garden Vineyard Walla Walla Valley
On Sale $59.99
100 % Syrah. Asian five spice is the first of many exotic aromas that come from this wine. It gives way to a palate laden with earth, dried herbs, tobacco leaf with a recurring reminder of Asian flavors.

2014 K Vintners Syrah Phil Lane Vineyard Walla Walla Valley
On Sale $69.99
100% Syrah. Violet and lavender float through the air. Licorice, tumbled river rock, sea fossils and black fruit. Need I say more? Ok, fresh and dried herbs and damp earth. Enough said. Oh, I forgot…Awesome!

2014 K Vintners Syrah “Motor City Kitty” Walla Walla Valley
On Sale $29.99
Deep and mouth filling. It opens with wet stone, dry herbs and a decidedly earthy palate. It gives way to tanned leather and cool fireplace ash. Long and compelling it is my sole holiday release.

2014 K Vintners Syrah Powerline Vineyard Walla Walla Valley
On Sale $44.99
A new cuvee that’s all from the Powerline Vineyard in the southern part of the Walla Walla Valley, the 2014 Syrah Powerline is all from the Phelps clone, was fermented with 100% whole clusters and aged in puncheons. One of the more bloody, meaty, iron-laced and savory Syrahs in the lineup, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a thick, unctuous texture, ripe tannin and a finish that makes your heart beat a touch faster. Give bottles a few years in the cellar and enjoy over the following decade.

2015 K Vintners Syrah Milbrandt Vineyard Walla Walla Valley
On Sale $29.99
Shimmering, this wine is alive with energy. Vibrant aromatics, red and black fruits and heaps of minerality on a long focused finish. Great today, great in ten years, the Great Milbrandt!
