Luxury Wilson Daniels Tasting

05 Dec Luxury Wilson Daniels Tasting

Saturday, December 7
12 to 4pm
In our Event Space

We are super stoked to welcome our good friends from Wilson-Daniels, one of America’s greatest importers. While most know them for the rarest wine on planet Earth, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (and no, we’re not popping any), the portfolio spans every wine region and includes many amazing winemakers. We’ll feature two tables for this event, one with our favorite everyday wines and a “luxury” table with some of the more rare Wilson-Daniels wines.

Table 1: The Big Dogs

2016 Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs, North Coast AVA
On Sale $29.99
Complexity and layering make this wine especially interesting as it goes from aromas of apple, butter and vanilla to deeper toast and baked apple on the palate. It’s medium in body, has tantalizing acidity and a lingering finish. Best through 2026.

2010 Schramsberg “J. Schram,” North Coast AVA
On Sale $109.99
This dry and beautifully aged bubbly is made from 84% Chardonnay and 16% Pinot Noir. Rich gold in color, it opens with fascinating and well-developed aromas of toasted baguette, toasted walnuts and marzipan, followed by a warm, buttery flavor that’s backed by baked apple and cinnamon. The fine-beaded texture is luxurious and the finish is long and lingering. Best through 2024.

2018 Kumeu River “Estate” Chardonnay, New Zealand
On Sale $29.99
This has attractive fresh peaches and grilled pears with intensity and focus, as well as gently complex, spice and flinty nuances. The palate delivers so much supple and vibrant stone-fruit flavor. Drink now. Screw cap.

2016 HDV Hyde de Villaine Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay, Carneros AVA
On Sale $65.99
This is very dense and serious with freshness and powerful acidity that gives it intensity and focus. Goes on and on with so much floral and sliced-lime flavor and hints of white flowers, pear blossom and minerals. So beautiful to drink now, but will improve with age.
95 points, James Suckling

2013 Tenimenti Angelini “Val di Suga,” Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany
on Sale $59.99
Good medium red-ruby. Musky aromas of ripe red cherry, spicy dark plum, tobacco, cedar and menthol. Then lively and perfumed but tight on the palate, showing lovely energy and focus to the flavors of cherry, spices and cedar. Finishes long, clean and youthfully imploded, with a firm tannic spine and enough fruit to stand the test of time. Lovely classic Brunello.

2013 Dal Forno Romano Valpolicella Superiore DOCG, Veneto
On Sale $84.99
This is a terrific wine that stood out-and stood tall-despite the fact that it was tasted alongside some of Dal Forno’s most important vintages of the top-shelf Amarone. If that’s not a full-on recommendation, I don’t know what is. The 2013 Valpolicella Superiore Monte Lodoletta oozes forth with thick concentration and an inky black color. The mouthfeel is thick and impenetrable, and the senses are treated to a long succession of black fruit, tar, spice, smoke, mesquite and barbecue flavors. The wine is full-bodied and very opulent, but it carries that massive intensity with grace and precision. This Valpolicella Superiore is very nicely done.

Table 2: Over-Delivering Values!

2018 Feudo Montoni ‘Vigna della Timpa’ Grillo Sicilia IGT, Sicily
On Sale $17.99
Luminous straw yellow. Delicate aromas of lemon, lime, sage and minty herbs. With aeration a note of Moscato Bianco-like orange blossom, grapefruit and sweet spices emerge. Fresh and juicy, with very good vibrancy to the flavors of fresh citrus fruits and minty herbs. The finish is long and juicy, offering a hint of powdered rocks on the tail end.

2016 Pierre Sparr Pinot Blanc, Alsace, France
On Sale $14.99
The nose is fresh and delicate. Aromas of peach and apple are followed by white flowers and mineral notes. On the palate the wine is all about orchard fruit flavors and a dynamic, fresh acidity that props up the vibrant mineral flavor and gives a sense of tension. The light body and textured finish make this perfect for both day drinking and light appetizers. Even better, day drinking with light appetizers.

2017 Feudo Montoni ‘Vigna Lagnusa’ Nero d’Avola Sicilia IGT, Sicily
On Sale $17.99
Bright deep red. Mineral and sweet spices complicate red cherry and botanical herbs on the nose and in the mouth. Long and very lively on the juicy, suave back end. Lovely stuff.

2017 Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico DOCG, Tuscany
On Sale $22.99
Black-skinned berry, violet, new leather and tobacco aromas are front and center. Reflecting the nose, the smooth, approachable palate doles out juicy Marasca cherry, ripe plum, nutmeg and a hint of licorice framed in polished, pliant tannins. Drink through 2024.

2015 Arnaldo-Caprai Montefalco Rosso DOC, Umbria
On Sale $19.99
Ripe plums, dried lavender, basil, tar, licorice and hot stones show here on the nose. Medium to full body, fresh acidity, round yet tight tannins and a fruity finish. Drink now.

2016 RouteStock Cabernet Sauvignon “Route 29,” Napa
On Sale $19.99
We are digging this crazy “value” from Napa! The fact is that $20 for ANYTHING Napa is a true bargain these days. Loaded with notes of dark black fruit, cedar, bay, dark cocoa and spicy plum. The mouth is full bodied, with black plum, damp earth, chocolate, savory hints of bay leaf and classic Napa Valley fruit. The wine plenty of richness and tannin, yet enough bright acidity to deliver a serious wine. The addition of other Bordeaux varietals adds to the complexity, depth and interest of this finely crafted Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
