St. Louisans Making Wine on the W. Coast

27 Feb St. Louisans Making Wine on the W. Coast

Did you know that quite a few Missouri natives are now making wine? From California all the way South Africa! This Saturday we’ll taste two west coast producers who we think are raising the bar for their respective regions. Chris Leonard focuses on Rhône varietals and Darin Kendrick is up in Oregon redefining Pinot and Chardonnay.

Table #1 Domaine Glennon, Willamette Valley

2018 Domaine Glennon “Temperance Hill” Rosé of Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills AVA
On Sale $24.99
This is a wine that instantly transports you to the heart of Bandol in France. 100% whole cluster pressed Pinot Noir from the famed Temperance Hill Vineyard that was barrel fermented in neutral oak. This is serious stuff, like you need to decant this bad boy. The nose is gorgeous, with spicy, mineral driven aromas of currant, blood orange, and white pepper, with a hint of lavender. Balancing the fruits is a bright acidity that carries the wine into a very refreshing finish. The food pairing options for this wine are endless.

2017 Domaine Glennon “Durant Vineyard” Chardonnay, Dundee Hills AVA
On Sale $44.99
The 2017 Durant Chardonnay saw 18 months of élevage. It has approximately 40% new oak, however that new oak comes in the form of 600L thick stave Damy puncheon instead of 228L barrique. We prefer larger format barrels, as they increase the liquid to wood ratio and tend to have a lower rate of oxygen transfer. It leaps from the glass with beautiful lemon, passion fruit, and flower aromas. On the palate there are two things that really strike me, the balance between flavor and acidity, and its texture. You immediately get elements of fresh meyer lemon rind and honeydew underpinned with a hint of vanilla. It has what a friend described as an “ethereal mouthfeel and viscosity.” Yet it is very light on its feet and has a steely sharpness that persists into the finish. 130 cases were produced.
Darin Kendrick, Owner

2017 Domaine Glennon Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley AVA
On Sale $34.99
Comprised of nearly equal parts J Wrigley and Bednarik vineyards. J Wrigley vineyard is located in the McMinnville AVA. Both are known for producing beautiful darker red fruited wines with structure. The wine is 70% whole cluster and had roughly 40% new Chassin oak (mostly 500L puncheon). When you taste this wine you are able to feel where it is from, it is not cloaked in oak or ripeness. The bouquet shows dried spices, damp earth, and tart red cherry. On the palette the wine bounces back and forth perfectly between delicacy and power with notes of cherry, strawberry, and rhubarb. It should easily drink well and improve over the next 10 years.

Table #2, Leonard Wine Co., Northern California

2016 Muddy Arch Roussanne, California
On Sale $19.99
Our brand, Muddy Arch, examines the rarely planted Roussanne varietal from top Northern California vineyard sites to expose the nuances of these local microclimates. Producing our wines in a classic wine style by utilizing balanced Roussanne fruit that is less ripe rewards us with lean and precise white wines that express a spectrum of notes from pungent stone fruit to brimming citrus to a deep honey.

From historic vines, our 2014 Collins Vineyard Zinfandel offers handsome aromas of white pepper, cigar box, and tobacco leaves while flavors of black fruits and forest floor hit your taste buds.
