03 Nov Umbria’s Best–Paolo Bea!
We have three wines on sale from a superstar Umbrian producer, Paolo Bea. The wines in the Bea portfolio are utterly unique and bursting with personality. They are also entirely handmade in small quantities, produced without fining or filtration and using native yeast fermentation. These wines are designed to be savored with great friends and great food.
2010 Paolo Bea Umbria Rosso “San Valentino”
On Sale $39.99
This is Paolo Bea’s most approachable wine, made of a majority Sangiovese with portions of the Umbrian grapes Sagrantino and Montepulciano. As with all Paolo Bea wines, it is made from old vines using “non-interventionist” techniques, allowing the natural character of the grapes and the vineyard to shine. Notes of red and blue fruits grace the palate, with hints of baking spices and fall flowers.
2009 Paolo Bea Rosso Riserva “Pipparello”
On Sale $62.99
This organically-grown blend of Sangiovese, Montepulciano, and Sagrantino is from the ripe 2009 vintage, and it shows tons of fruit character as a result. The palate shows notes of red berries, fresh herbs, and leather, with an incredibly soft, velvety finish. This wine is aged in steel for one year, oak for two years, and then in bottle for a year before release, to assure that it reaches the consumer in a relaxed, ready-to-drink state. It will only improve with more bottle age, but it is approachable now.
2009 Paolo Bea Sagrantino Vigneto Pagliaro
On Sale $79.99
This is a signature wine from Paolo Bea, showcasing the native Umbrian Sagrantino grape. It’s ripe and mature on the palate, with notes of dark berries, chocolate, raisins, and baking spices. Like the Pipparello, it is aged in stainless for one year, oak for two years, and in bottle for one additional year. As it opens up in the glass, this wine shows a wonderful complexity and character that embodies Paolo Bea’s style.
