In October 2021, the Flaxman Valley (up in Eden Valley) was decimated by a severe hail event. "I picked 25% of what I usually take from Nathan Burley's vineyard next door," says Callum Powell, winemaker, "less of Naimanya and just a few buckets from our vineyard out the front of the house. Chris Ringland is on the other side of us from Nathan's vineyard, and he wrote the vintage off after the hail, aside from the last four rows by his house that were slightly more protected. I asked early on at harvest if I might be able to pick what was left of the rest of the vineyard and combine it with our fruit to hopefully fill a barrel, and Chris was happy for me to take what was there." The 2022 Flaxman Valley Shiraz is a blend of those three vineyards, and it leads with pronounced whole-bunch notes (dehydrated orange peel, myrrh, green tea and kelp), black and purple fruit and swathes of exotic spice. This is wildly floral (violets, wild flowers, lavender, rose petals), detailed and perfumed, and in the mouth, it seems free of the shackles of oak. It is a wine of the land and the time, a thrilling expression of Eden Valley. Elegant. 13.2% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax.
